THE NARRATIVE STRATEGY FRAME

SPARK

SOURCE · PURPOSE · AUDIENCE · RISE · KICKER

where strategy becomes story

Every strategy has a story buried inside it. Most teams never find it, so they present targets and initiatives, and the room reaches for their phones. SPARK is our method for finding that story, and telling it so people actually move.

THE FRAMEWORK AT A GLANCE

Five steps that carry a strategy from a flat statement to a story that rises.

S

SOURCE

Find the story inside the strategy.

P

PURPOSE

Anchor in the why.

A

AUDIENCE

Make them the hero.

R

RISE

Build the arc.

K

KICKER

Land the next step.

THE STEP NO ONE ELSE TEACHES

Most frameworks assume you already have a story. SPARK helps you find it.

Every other method starts the same way: it hands you a structure and tells you to fill it in. None of them tell you how to find the story buried in a 40-slide deck full of targets, initiatives, and org charts.

That is the step SPARK adds, and it is the part of the method we can credibly own. The promise isn’t “we’ll tell your story better.”

We’ll find the story you didn’t know you had.

THE FIVE STEPS

SPARK is five moves.
The first finds the story.
The other four shape it and deliver it.

S
STEP 01

Source the story

Find the story inside the strategy.

A strategy is just a set of decisions. The story is the human truth underneath them. To dig it out; answer three questions, if you can’t answer all three, you don’t have a story yet. You have a slide.

The Shift

What is changing? Every strategy is a move from a current state to a better one. That gap is your plot. No change, no story.

The Stakes

What is at risk if nothing changes, and who pays for it? Stakes make people lean in. A strategy without stakes is a memo.

The Stakeholder

Who is this really about? Not the company, but a person whose life is different on the other side of the shift.

Shift + Stakes + Stakeholder = a story.

Everything after this is just shaping and delivering what you found here.

P
STEP 02

Purpose

Anchor in the why.

What belief drives this strategy? Purpose is the gravity that makes people care before they hear a single detail. Lead with the why, and the what finally has somewhere to land.

A
STEP 03

Audience

Make them the hero. You’re the guide.

Know what your audience wants, not what you want to say. The strategy serves their journey, not your ego. The moment you cast yourself as the hero, the story dies.

R
STEP 04

Rise

Build the arc.

Take them from shared context, to tension, to resolution. The one sentence version fits in an email or a cold open:

“We agreed on X, but Y, therefore Z.”
K
STEP 05

Kicker

Land it.

State the answer plainly. Make the relevance unmissable. Name the next step. Every story should leave the room with a verb: a clear, single thing to go do.

TWO DEPTHS, ONE MODEL

Underneath SPARK runs a simpler, three-act spine.

When you only have one breath, a keynote open, a sales call, an elevator, collapse the five steps into three acts. Same model, told shorter.

SOURCE + PURPOSE

Substance

Find the true thing worth saying.

AUDIENCE + RISE

Story

Shape it around the hero and the arc.

KICKER

Stage

Deliver it so the room moves.

SPARK is the working method. Substance → Story → Stage is the one-breath pitch.

SPARK IN PRACTICE

From a forgettable strategy to a story that lands.

THE INPUT – WHAT A CLIENT HANDS US

Meridian Freight, FY26

Reposition from lowest-cost regional carrier to premium reliability partner. Launch a real-time shipment-tracking platform. Raise prices ~8%. Cut customer churn from 22% to 12%. Grow enterprise accounts by 30%.

A perfectly good strategy. And a perfectly forgettable one.
Read it aloud in a town hall and watch the room reach for their phones. Now run it through SPARK

SHIFT

From the cheapest trucks on the road to the partner who never makes you look bad. Competing on trust, not price.

STAKES

Compete only on price and the next-cheapest always wins. For the customer, a late shipment isn’t a line item; it’s a stopped production line and a 6 a.m. call to the boss.

STAKEHOLDER

Priya, a plant operations manager. She doesn’t buy freight on price. She buys on one question she can never say out loud: am I going to get the call that the line stopped?

THE SOURCED STORY

The night a shipment vanished for nine hours, Priya’s line went dark, and she made the call she dreads versus the world where she sees every mile in real time, and never makes that call again.

BEFORE – AFTER

BEFORE – THE STRATEGYAFTER – THE STORY
Reposition from cost to reliability.A promise kept is the most valuable thing we sell.
Reduce churn 22% → 12%.So Priya never makes the 6 a.m. call again.
Launch the tracking platform.Show her every mile, before anything goes wrong.
Raise prices 8%.The price of never being blindsided.
